洛杉磯的飛機製造廠裡，突然發生了一場火災，工人伯金（Robert Cummings 飾）和朋友簡奮勇救火，但簡不幸葬身火海，事後調查發現伯金遞給簡的滅火器中裝滿了電油，於是警方將伯金定為重大嫌疑人，展開搜捕。獲悉這一情況的伯金回憶後發現，滅火器實際出自一名叫做弗萊的工人之手，但警方並未給伯金說明的機會，危急時刻，伯金奮力逃出，追尋弗萊的去向為自己洗脫罪名。在弗萊工作過的農場，伯金髮現農場主杜賓居然也跟此事有牽連，於是匆忙逃跑。亡命路途上，鉑金結識了廣告模特佩蒂（Priscilla Lane 飾）...
